L’Ecole des femmes: seduction as empowerment

Time to brush up on your theatre classics : named after Molière’s play (in which an old man wants to marry his uneducated pupil in the hope of avoiding adultry – and fails), L’Ecole des Femmes is a sassy, sexy, tongue-in-cheek brand straight out of the imagination of Laura Sfez, a fashion designer based between Paris and Los Angeles. We first came across the brand by admiring Laura’s personal style – think Peter Pan-collar dresses with lacy underwear, high-waisted jeans with Nouvelle Vague inspired tshirts, slinky silk shirts, belted trenchcoats… Quintessentially Parisian. Imagine our joy when we realised that all her clothes were actually available to us lesser mortals! To be accessorized with a cigarette, glass of champagne and “French girl pout”, of course. We chat to Laura about inspiration, seduction, and why LA will never be Paris (bien sûr).

Describe the L’Ecole des Femmes woman!

She is a seductress, elegant yet dangerous. She has courage, a sense of humor and adventure. I love her.

When designing, what aesthetic references to you play on?

I have many actually. Everything I ever want to experience in life or am curious about aesthetically, I want to experiment with. If I want to feel like Serge Gainsbourg’s suave for a day, I’ll create a look that evokes that. But then sometimes I want to be the love interest in a movie I saw as a child that I don’t know the name of but that made me feel something. I like roleplay, I like personalities, characters, uniforms and clean lines.

Your clothes manage to be both cheekily sexy and quite classic. How do you balance both?

I don’t actively do anything, I just give myself the freedom to do whatever I like and it comes out that way I suppose.

For you, is seduction a form of empowerment?

Seduction is a power. It is a choice. Seduction should be natural however, and the clothes we wear help us seduce greatly. They are a powerful form of expression, they aren’t just clothes. There is a history going on in each item as everything has already been done and I am not inventing anything. There is a fabric, a color, a print, a fit, a cut… All of those are dramatically important and tied to seduction. As with our hairstyles, facial expressions, mannerisms and the words and voice we choose, they are all expression.

What’s your backstory?

Ah man, don’t ask me that! I’m from Paris and LA and grew up between the two and own a clothing line that I like to call indie. I don’t agree with current fashion conventions and just make up my own as I go along.

What’s it like, being a Parisian in Los Angeles?

To be anything from anywhere in Los Angeles is honestly like being a ghost. I don’t exist there, I just do my thing and never walk with anyone or connect with anyone or meet anyone. Paris is the opposite, so it’s really hard to be happy in Los Angeles socially for me.

The one item in your closet you can’t live without?

My trench coat.

You’ve got an important social media following and are quite active on Instagram. How do you think that impacted you as a brand?

Hugely. Instagram is powerful and amazing and it has helped me reach so many people. I am so thankful. It is thanks to Instagram that my business thrives! Instagram is the biggest microphone in the world right now and I aim to say and scream everything I need to!!
