GLAMOROUS PLACES

In Brussels with Kim Mee Hye

Our thoughts are with Brussels in these testing times. So we’re choosing to celebrate life in the European capital, city of waffles and naughty statues! Who other than Kimy Gringoire-Lejeune, founder of jewelry brand KIM MEE HYE (her name in Korean), to take us round her hometown? We fell in love with her creations during our Jewelry Designers shoot for Please 18, delicate, thoughtful pieces, sometimes intriguing – big crush for her Menottes bracelet and its diamond button, as well as for the über-cool New York photoshoot for her latest collection (scroll down and see them here). Shopping for Belgian designers, tasting shrimp croquettes and hunting through antiques shops – read on for Kimy’s best spots in Brussels!

Apéro time: you have to go for an “apéro” and it always happens Chez Franz, an old bistro that has just been done up. We all meet up there at the end of the day and we often leave very late. A great atmosphere, simple and authentic – the perfect spot for a family brunch at the weekend. Three friends opened this local bistro, a homely place in the north part of the city, located in an area filled with Horta-style houses (an Art Nouveau architect). 30 avenue du Haut-Pont

A shopping trip: ICON, in the city centre, is a must-go. Michelle is known for her incredible selection of international designers, as well as for her unfailing support towards Belgian designers. It’s impossible to come out of the boutique without a beautiful piece. Another great store: in the north part of the city, go take a look at Graphie Sud. Laurence and Vanessa transport you into their chic and bohemian world, always with impeccable taste. Nouveau Marché aux Grains / 195 rue Berkendael

Stop for croquettes: below the city centre, you have to stop for a glass of white wine and taste shrimp croquettes at Le Laboureur, a traditional Brussels bistro. Also convenient: the bar is just opposite the Margiela boutique! 108 rue de France

Sunday stroll: at the weekend, you have to go to the Marolles, the “soul of Brussels”, with its Place du Jeu de Balle where the famous flea market is held every morning. The Rue Blaes and the Rue Haute, the two main streets of the Marolles area, are known for their antiques shops. And to fully understand the Brussels way of life and its delicacies, I recommend having lunch at La Clef d’Or, on the square, and tasting one of their typical Belgian dishes.
