Whatever goes on in the head of a 22-year-old creative? We’ll never know what pushed Denver-born, New York-based young photographer Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) to jump off a building and brutally end her budding career. Some say it was for love… Whatever the reason, the tragic ending lends an even more mysterious edge to Francesca’s photography, a depiction of the female body, always shot in black and white, that plays with derelict surroundings and an overall eerie vibe. After the Foam gallery in Amsterdam, “On Being An Angel,” an exhibition of the photographer’s autoportraits, now travels to the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris. A nude body is partially covered by strips of ripped-off wallpaper, and seems to be stepping out of the wall itself. In one particularly disturbing shot, the photographer is pictured hanging from a door frame in a nearly evangelical pose. It seems almost too intimate to watch… but hauntingly beautiful all the same.
