INCREDIBLE ART

How do you make a pair of jeans?

Why shouldn’t denim be treated with the same level of respect as couture? In the middle of fashion week, designer and jean genius Faustine Steinmetz presented her first show, Slow Denim, at the Joyce Gallery at the heart of the Palais Royal: a detailed account of the incredible care and technique that are needed to make a simple pair of jeans. A way to pay homage to one of the key elements of a modern wardrobe, and a celebration of exceptional handicraft – read the words of the artist herself…

“I create pieces that everyone has or has had in their wardrobe at some point in their life, except I make them from scratch using artisanal techniques. I find our contemporary relationship to buying and owning very disgusting. We no longer buy things we like, we no longer buy things we intend to keep, we are only interested in things which are cheap and readily accessible. Everything is disposable. My work is a reaction to these ways. Focusing on denim as the symbol of industrial clothing, an everyday object, valueless to most, worn by so many, I work long hours on them to add value where very little is usually seen. Why shouldn’t a pair of denim jeans that you wear everyday be given the same level of attention as a couture dress destined to be worn once?”
